Talent alignment not management is what you need.

Talent Alignment and not management.

There has been lots of talk by big wigs about managing talent. The reality is it is more important to align the talent with organizational goals rather than manage it. Management means you deal with it though it is not perfect. However alignment means all the talent is doing their part pushing the organization forward to meet their goals. It is like a well working clock with each person representing a cog. The clock works best when all the moving parts are aligned. There are three facets to talent alignment; (1) hiring the right talent, (2) employee performance management, and (3) organizational assessments. Each one of these is an important part of your company’s talent alignment strategy.

Hiring the right talent is incredibly important and perhaps the most important of the three facets. Think of hiring like a long term relationship if the core values and strengths are not what you need to be happy the relationship won’t last. This is the same for when you hire, if the talent is not aligned with the organizational goals it will be a short relationship (hire).

Performance management is an amazingly useful tool. Through proper performance management techniques you are able to help foster and develop your talent into their full potential. The process of performance management requires that one does performance appraisals of their talent and then provide useful feedback to ensure development. This is like a checkup that makes sure everyone is reaching their goals and staying aligned.

Organizational assessments have many different forms and type. However in essence they are the same, because they all examining how the talent and organizational goals are aligning. It can be through employee survey measuring satisfaction or employee engagement measures that measure how engaged an employee is. These all have the same underlying principal of determining what the employees are doing well and which areas need development and improvement, to align the company and bring the company to its’ goals.

These three facets will be the main focus of my writing as this blog moves forward. Each of these blog entries will detail an important part of the talent alignment process. By ensuring proper talent alignment an organization can reach new heights and new innovation.
